The first year we were at Avella Orchard we focused our planting on summer pears. One of the pears was Ubileen, a pretty Bartlett-type pear that ripened in late July or early August, reputedly tough, vigorous and disease resistant.
I can testify to the tough part, as it was planted in an area we soon found out to be one of the harshest locations on our property. I can also testify how LONG it takes for pears to start to bear fruit! We've had this tree in the ground for 10 years - last year was the first year with more than one or two blossoms, and still no fruit. I have my fingers crossed that 2020 will be the year I can taste an Ubileen pear from our very own tree!
